Framed by public and private medieval buildings, the Palazzo Comunale (town hall) sits at the southern part of the square. With its grand steps this is a popular venue for Italian weddings. The Palazzo dates back to 1236 and dominates the Piazza della Repubblica. Opposite is the 14th century Pallazzo del Capitano Popolo which used to be the official residence of Cardinal Passerini.
